Happy Friday – I demand a retest!

Ernie FINALLY got his DNA test back.  But, I’m not so happy with the outcome.  I think there was either incorrect testing or some papers got mixed up because it is IMPOSSIBLE for him  to be what they listed on the paper.  Here is a picture of Ernie, as you can see he has a lot of terrier in him and he only weights 21 pounds.

Here is what they listed him as:

Level 3: Boxer

Level 4: Beagle

Level 4: German Shorthaired Pointer

Level 4: Poodle

Level 4: Pug

Level 5: Miniature Pinshcer

Level 5: Parson Russell Terrier

Level 1: Over 75% of the DNA found in your dog is from the breed listed.

Level 2: Each breed listed represents between 37-74% of your dog’s DNA

Level 3: Each breed listed represents between 20-36% of your dog’s DNA

Level 4: Each breed listed represents between 10-19% of your dog’s DNA

Level 5: Each breed listed represents less than 10% of your dog’s DNA

What happened to levels 1 and 2??  Anyways, I plan on writing this company and attaching a picture of Ernie so that they can clearly see he is NOT 20-36% Boxer!!!

Bundled Under: Ernie, Happy Friday.

If I had to guess I would say he’s 100% fur lips.

Maybe, right before you swabbed his mouth he went on a poop eating spree at the dog park.

That is so disappointing! Could you imagine telling people that you have a boxer cross?! You’d be laughed out of the dog park.

We have a pretty good idea what our two girls are so it would be interesting to see what they came back as.

Have you ever heard Ernie say “I coulda been a contender!” ?? I rest my case! No boxer here!

I work at a large vet clinic and we get these “what is my dog” questions all the time. Ernie looks just like thousands of other mixes of unknown descent and I can assure you that “looks like a terrier” is probably the least accurate of methods for predicting the breed of a mutt so no it’s not impossible for a dog to resemble a certain breed but have none of that breed in it’s background.

Having done over 100 dogs using the DNA tests, they are not 100% accurate nor do the companies that offer it claim to be, but it’s not a scam either, it’s about 90% and can be a good thing for people who are just curious about the possible background of their dog. It offers insight into the dog behavioral patterns and could help your vet diagnose potential health issues down the road.

It sounds like you used a different place than I did, but had equally perplexing results. The first time I sent in the swab from my 85 pound mutt (who looks like a lab/shepherd cross), the results showed no primary or secondary matches, but “in the mix” were beagle and yorkie. An 85 pound yorkie mix — almost worth the money just to be able to say it. After they added a bunch new breeds to the test, I resubmitted a sample — this time with a picture, and shockingly, no yorkie or beagle, but instead lab, chow, akita and malamute (much more believable). Whatever Ernie is, he’s awfully cute.
